Let's Start at the Very Beginning
An Intro to Reading Music for Theatre Performers
About Liz:
Music has always been Liz's BFF. Her first memories include
watching her mother, the head of the music department at
Wingate University, teach her students music theory. At 2 years old,
she started studying the violin, only to demand to switch to the
cello because “she could sit down and it doesn’t plug up your
mouth to play.” At 5 years old, she started to learn the piano, with
her grandmother as her teacher.
She eventually went to Bucknell University and graduated with a
dual-degree BA in Music and Theatre. At Bucknell, she was the alto
section leader of the Rooke Chapel Choir, a select group who toured
the US, Canada, and Costa Rica. She was also a soloist on the nationally televised “Bucknell Candlelight Christmas”.
She went on to study in London, where she was selected to solo at the Barbican Centre in a John Cage Musicircus.
Though she spent her undergraduate years concentrating on 20th century classical music, she knew that her true love was musical theatre. Combining this love with her genetic disposition to teach, she achieved her M.A. in Theatre Education from Emerson College. It was there that she discovered a passion for using musical theatre as means to teach other disciplines. Upon graduating with her masters, she has made a career as a performer and teacher and and she hasn’t looked back.
She has taught all ages and abilities. She spent 4 summers teaching private voice lessons and musical theatre performance at Belvoir Terrace, performing arts camp for girls. She created and taught classes ranging from teen acting to musical
theatre to improv for Worcester Foothills Theatre School. In Boston, she partnered with "Upon a Star" to create a program that taught basic musicality to children, using the scores of musicals like Hello Dolly and Oklahoma. She is a Level 2 Certified Music Together teacher, which is an early childhood music program that encourages adults to explore their own musicality to help their children’s musical growth.
As an actor, she has performed across the country in Cabaret (Kost), Sweeney Todd (Johanna), Titanic (Kate McGowen), Sound of Music (Elsa), Scarlet Pimpernel (Marie/ us Marguerite), Tommy (Chorus Leader), Threepenny Opera (Nellie), The Gig (Lucy).
She is passionate about musical theatre. She is passionate about teaching. And she is passionate about helping you be the best musician you can be.
